Heading Home!

I’m sitting in the house about to load up the car with stuff. There are five of us leaving today, one leaving tomorrow, two leaving Tuesday, and the rest leave next weekend. The last three days have been really amazing. Drew and I had the BEST camp we’ve ever had, where the kids were just perfect. There were hardly any “give me…”‘s from this school, which really makes a difference. Drew and I just had a great time with them. They also taught us a lot of Chichewa, so that was really fun. We had standard eight, and they knew a TON of English. At presentations on the final day, I sat down and all the girls sat down around me. They wanted to sit next to me so bad, that they were fighting with each other about it! I finally felt good about the whole trip and all the frustrations I had felt from teaching were washed away. I wish all the camps had been like this one!

Last night we had a group evaluation of the whole session which went really well. We all had little things we would change, but overall it was pretty smooth. After evaluation, we had a huge cookout with vegetarian kabobs, pasta salad, all kinds of fruit, coleslaw, potatoes, and corn. There was even a big chocolate cake at the end! We ate like champs.

After dinner we were given superlatives by the coordinators. Mine was something like, “most likely to marry a Malawian bartender”. (Inside joke with the crew!) We were each given nsima spoons with our names on them. It was really neat. Jay and Chris put together a really tear-jerking video with pictures and videos from the trip. That made it all really sink in that we were about to leave! After the slideshow, we played the Lion game, which was absolutely hilarious. Apparently it’s a World Camp tradition/secret, so I can’t talk about it!!

So now I’m going to jump off here and pack my stuff in to the car. My flight goes from Lilongwe, Malawi to Johannesburg, South Africa to Senegal to Dulles. I’ll be getting on a plane at 7am US time and getting in to Dulles at 6:30am tomorrow. So, it’s about a 23 hour process. Hope everyone’s doing well, and I’ll see you all in the States!
